I always hate these stories because no one ties the increase in crime to the recession. They like to separate it out like all of a sudden more people just decided to be criminals.
What's going to happen in this town is they are going to pass some unconstitutional ordinance now that it has more attention. So don't be surprised in 1 year they are beating prostitutes and arresting drug dealers on site guilty or not!
UBJ: I live in Columbus. Google "Ganther's Place" and you will find that this article is, um, interesting at best and complete B.S. at worst.
I absolutely believe that the officers made off-handed comments, but they also have not given up on this neighborhood. Residents in that area are some of the most serious community activists in town and won't let them.
Had this story mentioned the Near-East side I would have bought it.
The surrounding areas of German Village (wealthy, educated population) and Merion Village (being gentrified with rainbow flags flying as we speak) are also little hot pockets of crime. GV has one of the highest burglary rates in the city - complete with a rash of violent home invasions two years ago.
Did I mention my 81 year old landlady was murdered and stuffed in a wishing well in the back of a oh-so-posh Victorian? I. Shit. You. Not.
@ KST - I always thought of Columbus as a large college town. It just struck me as odd that some police officers were so fed-up with crime that their best advice was for the citizens to move.
Concerning to whom the fault of oppression belongs; "We are not all equally guilty but we are all equally responsible" - Rabbi Abraham Hescel
Concerning blaming others for the problem; "...And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?... - Matthew: 7 1-5
Concerning how to fix the problems concerning oppression; "Someone once said that the word 'motivation' should never be used in the singular. Some combination of motives always exist and it's impossible for anyone to qualify the proportion of each that is involved in any given act" - Warren Buffet (in an interview in the USA Today)
