I want to say it's because people who don't have much celebrate with food. I mean it's a cheap celebration to get a couple of hamburgers a 2 liter of soda and a big jug of ice cream from smart and final.
My personal view is that when you live next to a body of water or near a bigger metropolitan area you have a higher level of vanity that makes people work out. So it's kind of a form of peer pressure.
Without the concern of someone saying you are a fat ass you might fall into a comfort level that isn't healthy for you life wise and socially.
Miss., Louisana, South Carolina, Georgia and Texas are all on the Gulf or the Atlantic.
While I've yet to see a fat skeleton - I often hear people say that so-and-so is just big-boned. When are they gonna' wake up and realize that they are just fat?
I would bet you the majority of the fat people in those states are in inland cities. But when I was at Galveston I saw some beige whales in the hot water.
My second theory is out of boredom. I think when there aren't enough activities people live a more sedentary life. Someone needs to make gym mandatory with real physical trainers to make sure people grow up with healthy workout habits.
It can be difficult to get your body to workout at the same time every day, but working out at home is a great way to make it easier. To get more detailed info on workout log, visit on hyperlinked site.
Concerning to whom the fault of oppression belongs; "We are not all equally guilty but we are all equally responsible" - Rabbi Abraham Hescel
Concerning blaming others for the problem; "...And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?... - Matthew: 7 1-5
Concerning how to fix the problems concerning oppression; "Someone once said that the word 'motivation' should never be used in the singular. Some combination of motives always exist and it's impossible for anyone to qualify the proportion of each that is involved in any given act" - Warren Buffet (in an interview in the USA Today)

I guess people in those states (hell in America in general)confuse "eating much" with "eating well".
