The Answer May Be As Simple As...

Wonder bread.
The spill in the Gulf has gone beyond that of one being contained by floating booms.

As BP attempts to solve the problem by a "junk shot" consisting of concrete, golf balls and tires - there has to be a more simple and less harmful remedy.
But what type of concrete will BP use?
Sure, hydraulic concrete expands as it dries - but won't the water in the mix turn to ice?
Anyone who has attempted to sweat solder a pipe knows that a piece of bread stuffed into the copper pipe can prevent leaks which will enable one to create a seal.
Maybe BP should call Wonder for a few tons of bread instead of that ridiculous "junk shot".

I really don't think that anything will stop the blowout other than a relief well, which is going to take a while.

As for getting the oil out of the water, not going to happen. There is too much below the surface.

Not a bad suggestion given the enduring nature of processed bread. Could be very good for the health of American citizens at the same time.

I like the hay example that a couple of guys have put out there. What we have here is a full blown fuckup and it's like Cherynobl and that is getting it to stop. The gulf will go through a decade of death and regrowth.

The bright side is maybe the marsh land outside of NO can finally regrow.

Freeman's right - hay absorbs oil very well.

There's also something called hairbooms that works like a charm. See my post How Our Hair Can Save The World on it and watch the video demo. At least one group has been collecting tons of hair and making it into hairbooms, and they're ready to go. Haybooms would be cheap to make too.

The thing is, there's no profit in them, so they're being ignored.

Haybooms, hair, bread, whatever.
Kit - I read your Einstein quote and thought that by using current thinking to "solve" this problem BP may just be causing bigger problems (i.e. disperants).

The more natural the solution the better chance it will have of actually working.
The further the solution is from industry thinking the more likely it will work.
