Value has been replaced with what people perceive you to have. So the man who owns his house outright and has no debt is somehow less wealthy than the guy who has a interest only loan on a McMansion and 2 car notes and lives check to check.
This whole thing is 3 card monty and they got rid of the card you placed your bet. No one knows what money is anymore as the idea of credit and access to it has replaced having real money.
