I've read the lists of the the AFI's top 100 movies of all time (original 1998 and 10th anniversary).I never noticed that in the history of cinema, there have only been two movies with a minority protagonist to make either list.
On the original list it was, of course, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (at number 99). On the anniversary list it was Do the Right Thing (at number 96). A gorilla made the list both times (the original King Kong) as well as an alien (E.T.) .
Really? In the history of Hollywood, there were no movies about Asians? What about The Joy Luck Club? Where are the Hispanics/Latinos?
I see that Birth of a Nation made the original list (at number44) but in more politically correct times it seems to have lost it's appeal and has fallen from the newer list completely.
The thing that got me thinking about good movies was that I saw The Five Heartbeats for the first time today? (So I'm a little behind.)
No, the movie doesn't qualify for one of the 100 best movies of all time. I'm not even sure if I would put it on my list of the 100 best Black movies of all time. But it had Troy Beyer. I wasn't a Dynasty fan but I liked Troy Beyer. If I had to choose between Halle Berry, Stacey Dash and Troy, Troy would win. She just looks like she'd be nice.
But Troy can't top my childhood crush. Dianne Carrol was my girl. I used to wish that I was Cory (her son on her show Julia). Ms Carrol is also in The Five Heartbeats looking as good as ever.
Am I disqualified from knowing anything about Black culture because I had never seen the movie? What movies are the five (or so) movies that everyone should see? What are the five (or so) minority or Black movies everyone should see? What are the five (or so) best movies and minority movies? What are the most seminal movies?
My favorite movies are; Malcolm X, Snatch, Black Hawk Down (or Apocalypse Now), Kung Foo Hustle and the Old Boy trilogy. My list seems to change about every three months. No, they're not the movies that I would say are the best. But they are the movies that I watch at least once a month.
I ask you.

People enjoy movies that they can relate to. If your white how can you relate to the five heartbeats, or the Joy Luck Club or anything that is not white. I LOVE THE JOY LUCK CLUB. It turns me from a big strapping 300 pound six foot five man to a 300 pound six foot five sissy girl that is sitting in the middle of the floor crying her heart out. (The Color Purple and Imitation of Life have the same effect on me)
But since we don't vote on these top 100 list we are not reflected.

At the very least see When We Were Kings, Wattstax, Claudine, and Eve's Bayou to start off for for the Black films, if you haven't already. I also like the Sidney Poitier/Bill Cosby comedies from the 70's. For non-Black, I have so many---too many to really list.

Your question "What are the movies everyone should see..." is impossible to answer. If you presume to know this answer....well, you are a presumptuous, all knowing, saw every movie ever made mofo. Because of the subjective nature of movies, knowing what movies someone should see and what they will get out of it is just hard to do - although, I guess literature, film and art survey classes do this every day.

I can't think of anything Latin that was one of my faves (where the lead was actually played by a Latin person). Can you? If Al Pacino had been Latin, then Scar Face of course.
There are lot's more, but it's too hard to think of them off the top of your head. I would need to start with a comprehensive list of all the movies I've ever seen.
I was watching Heartbeats with my cousins and they teased me for not having seen it yet. Then the discussion turned to what are the movies every black person has seen. Scarface came out on top. Then I asked what about minority or Black movies. We looked at the AFI list, most of us had seen most of the movies. Then I asked what Black movies most non-Blacks had seen. Boys in the Hood was probably what we came up with.
d.j. - Some stories are almost universal. Although most Black movies are either about gangsters/gang members, overcoming racism or a juvenille comedy. Tyler Perry seems to incorporate all three. I relate to the story not so much the race. Much like you seemed to get the story of four pretty Chinese women assimilating.
invisible woman - I've seen all that you've listed except Wattstax. I'll have to look it up. The documentary When We Were Kings is great. Ali is the only celebrity that I'd be star-struck over and I still get a chill watching big Goerge go down.
brohammas - I enjoyed that movie about the South African boxer. Boys in the Hood was good until we saw Menace to Society. Menace made Boys look like an After School Special. Cube? Good? Successful maybe, but he seems to always be Cube playing Cube.

Let me just list one movie that I'm sure no one else will ever list. It's not a black movie but it might as well be because it's about hardship and how to overcome it and it has almost everyone in it. And that would The Blues Brothers.

Interesting...I can count on one hand how many acclaimed mainstream films I've seen and Scarface is not one of them. I did see the Five Heartbeats because my son really liked it...it was okay. I like films about subcultures...these are a few of my favorites:
