36,000 A Year

Before you rush out and buy this spiffy bio-gear,
Remember - pandemics and plagues are nothing new.
What does seem to be more prevalent are the multi-derived (and not known to exist in nature) strains of these diseases.
It seems as though the followers of Joseph Mengele have found a new population on which to test their ideas.
But according to the CDC - the most common causes of death in America in any given year (about 2,448,017) will be;
- Heart Disease - 652,091
- Cancer - 559,312
- Stroke - 143,579
- Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases - 130,933
- Accidents - 117,809
- Diabetes - 75,119
- Influenza/Pneumonia - 63,001
(36,000 from Flu alone and with 220,000 hospitalized)
Yep, that's right.
Thirty-six thousand people die from the flu every year.
Most of the other deaths could be eliminated by diet, exercise and abstaining from tobacco products.
How much of this new panic is much ado about nothing?

  1. Right! But fear creates revenue. Fear sells a story. Fear creates a demand for products that will protect you. Swine flu is today's Katrina, today's 9-11, today's West Nile virus... and the cycle continues.

  2. I'll say this and someone is going to be mad at me but..... this is just another opportunity to make money for the people who make Tamiflu. People are lining up to get flu shots even though they don't work for the swine flu.

If I was a conspiracy theorists and sometimes I am I would say the propaganda behind this is nuts. I mean it's the flu and it's treatable but people are acting like it's from a Sci-fi movie like their eyes are going to bleed. I'm getting calls from people asking me if people are sick in LA, and some people are actually blaming the Mexicans like they are diseased people.

I tell you one thing you aren't thinking about the depression/recession anymore.

  3. @ RunningMom - What's up with your spot? No new posts in a while?

It's interesting that you bring up Katrina. Those who prepared and acted in a responsible manner had the least lasting damage.
Same could be said of staying healthy to protect against illness.

@ FreeMan - I was thinking that it could be a ploy to create interest in Illegal Immigration but I wasn't sure how to frame the opinion.

  4. Out here it's trying to be construed that way but a lot of people are protesting calling it bigotry. Maybe when it gets to 10K cases in the border states it will be time for the republicans to act on building the moat with alligators.

See I know you seen the Zeitgeist and you know what this country can do when it wants to.
