NOT Sexy

For some reason, most women love the sax.
The accordion - not so much.
It's not as though one can woo his woman with a sexy rendition of some Luther Vandross song while playing this instrument.
The lowly accordion is probably the least sexy of all instruments.
When most people think of the accordion - they think of ethnic European Polkas and the Chicken Dance at weddings.
But a lot of Mexican music uses the accordion as well.
Have you ever been to a quinceneria without dancing to accordion music?
Down here on the Gulf, the instrument is used in a genre of music called Zydeco. (Where's Mills when I need him?)
Both Cajuns (White descendants of the French) and Creoles (Black/Mixed descendants of the French) feature the instrument prominently in their music.
When I first heard Zydeco I had no idea what was going on.
"What the heck is that?", I asked.
But after years of hearing the music I've grown to like a few songs.
The Trail Rides are fun and the dances are family friendly and always spirited.
So, after rethinking this instrument - maybe it is sexy after all.
If not sexy - at least it's always associated with fun.

  2. Accordion is never going to be sexy and fun might be fun in a funny to participate in way.

I have no doubt that a fine woman with the accordion would make me listen but without that woman that instrument looks like the thing they use to flush the chimney.

  4. Oh I have to disagree. It does depend upon the music being played of course. The Eastern European stuff is soooo depressing but Argentinian Tango.......there is nothing that comes close to the passion that seethes between two dancers moving to the sound of the Accordian and accompanying musicians.

  6. @ Desrtflower - IDK about that but 'sexy IS fun'.

@ FreeMan - Man... My sister played the accordion as a kid. I HATED those concerts but after going to many events when the accordion played a large part in the fun - maybe it's the context of the music that matters.

@ brohammas - Don't lie - you just like the Chicken Dance. Is there Zydeco in Philly?

@ Amanda - It's just odd that it never really went mainstrem but that most ethnic groups use it in their music.
For such a universal instument - it's odd that it's still thought of as being 'ethnic'.
(BTW - I should have known that you'd notice the seething dancers ;))

@ JGalt - What you know bout Tha Boot? Southeast Texas might as well be Southwest louisiana.

  7. @UBJ: You know Beaumont is only that big bridge from Lake Charles. Bad part is the cops stop you coming and going for "traffic infractions"
