The American M-4 assault riffle is one of the most technologically advanced weapons on the planet.At less than seven pounds, when fully loaded - the gas operated, air cooled, multi-position telescoping stock weapon is America's answer in most hostile situations.
But the weapon often jams and fails to function when stressed.
The weapon is expensive and fails under less than perfect condition.
The older AK-47 has fewer moving parts and fewer technological advances.But this weapon still works when wet or dirty.
This weapon works because it has a bit more play and a larger margin for error.
So why do so many government programs fail to produce the desired results?
Because like American made weapons - American programs are overly designed to work only under optimal conditions with little or no account taken for any variation.

The AK-47 is truth!
Accept no substitutes.
I think this happens because of money. American weapons manufacturers hire lobbyists to go to Washington and spread the money around and then Washington uses our money to buy whatever it is they're selling. Even if the weapons don't work as they are supposed to.
Just read up on the V-22 Osprey helicopter program. The Osprey is a lemon but the military bought it anyway.
I'm still waiting for the Gi-Joe guns that shoot red or blue lazers (depending on if you are a good or bad guy). Of course the problem with these guns, despite never jamming ot running out of ammunition, is that you can avoid being hit by one by doing cartwheels and summer saults.

You could have said the same thing about the Soviet Union. Yet, the Ak-47 is Soviet made.
@ Anon - Exactly my point.
If the Soviet union would have designed their government programs and economy the same way they designed their weapon - maybe the USSR would be thriving today.
It's also my understanding that the AK-47 is inexpensive to mass produce, which is why there are so many of them.
Perhaps the real problem with this distinct difference is that when the AK-47 was initially made the contract didn't go to someone's cousin?!?
Maybe it's something like that.
