Don't Ask (Don't Tell)

Should gays be allowed to be in the military?
Apparently, one of the baddest groups of warriors in ancient Greece was the Sacred Band (Army of Lovers) who formed Thebes' elite guard..

Maybe gays can fight wars.

  1. We are in a situation where the Army had (for a time) lowered it's standards to let people in. The military is hurting for bodies. They need all the help they can get. When I was in the military we had gay folks. They didn't come out and say it but you knew. Dick Cheney doesn't have a problem with Gay people or sending people off to war.

  2. Most people already work with Gay people but I don't see why the military cares at all. It's not like there's a gay bathroom. People will get used to it but most people don't like to be politically correct.

  3. ^ I think if Don't Come Out Of The Closet becomes a thing of the past, not having a "gay bathroom" would become a problem.

Thanks for this bit of history UBJ - fascinating and useful info for future debates.

  4. There have always been gays in the military, in every military through out history. Need we go into how the might Spartans got down with their "brothers" in arms?!? Don't let the movie 300 fool you, like much of ancient Greece, the Spartans were boy lovers as well.

There is no question that gays can fight wars. The question (whether it's stupid or not) is, "Should gays in the military be allowed to come out publicly?" As a civilian I'm like "whatever", but we must remember that the American Military is a strange organism (I speak in a sociopolitical sense) and thus is apt to view (and indeed does) this question in totally different way.
