Because vanilla is non-offensive.
Because vanilla mixes with everything while retaining the flavor of any other ice cream.
Because vanilla is the default choice when people don't feel thinking.
Because vanilla can be tolerated by most people in most situations.
Because vanilla is somewhat bland.
What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?
You probably can't find more than two people out of ten who would list vanilla as theirs.
While it would be hard to find any group that would overwhelmingly pick another flavor as their favorite - most would settle for vanilla.

I have to say I see this and it makes sense however I like to keep it exciting and have an abundance of flavor that I would like to call "total party in the mouth". I like most chocolate blened flavors. Chunky Monkey, Half Baked, Cookies and Cream...
You're right. Vanilla is the flavor that most would likely settle for if they can't obtain their favorite. Vanilla ice cream is the default flavor, which is not the case for vanilla in other instances (despite what much of the world's populations have been socialized to believe).
Chocolate is my favorite. ;) But very interesting though.
