Lymphedema

Above is a "Thick & Juicy" steak. There is still a little fat, but in all the right places to ensure maximum enjoyment and pleasure.

Above is a picture of FAT. No meat... just fat. This is NOT "Thick", it's just FAT!!!

To anyone familiar with Manuel Uribe of the Discovery Channel, Lymphedema (those big swollen things on the inside of his legs that make Manuel appear as though doing the splits) is not something to be droppin' like it's hot.

I came across these pictures on the blog; "You Know You Dead Azz Wrong". (I blacked-out her face. She may not know that she may have a medical problem)

I can't be sure that this woman is suffering from a Lymphatic ailment but this appears to be the case. I just brought a cousin to the hospital to have such growths (no, not this big) removed (although in the early stages and of the appearance of a large boil.) from her inner thigh. My cousin is diabetic and refused to alter her diet. She's survived breast cancer but it's her life choices and her Southern eating habits that need to be altered.

I'm not picking cotton all day nor plowing fields all day, so I don't need to eat the same diet as my ancestors. I don't need a big woman to protect me. The idea that "bigger is better" may be killing many of us. There is a difference between "Thick" and "Fat" (see above photos).

Anorexia may not be the choice you're seeking but this desire to be "Thick" is not the answer. Beyonce' may have the perfect body for some, others may prefer a Holly Robinson-Peete body type. I'm more concerned with one's fitness level than their weight. (Although I seem to prefer a long and lean physic.)

So when a man says that some black women are too fat, he may just be thinking of the survival of his prospective (or current) wife and children. He may be attuned to some sort of innate survival mechanism alerting him to the dangers of being over-weight.

C'mon ladies, how many of you wish that you were the same size that you were before the kids (or before the gravy and salt-pork meals)?

Siditty - I'm not saying that Black women are fat, but that there is pressure on Black women to be "Thick". The health risks aren't worth it. Hypothyroidism? I didn't know that you'd be assigning homework?

All I can say to that picture is damn. She seems to be in good spirits, though. You just taught me something!

Yeah, that's a hot mess. At least she is working it out.

I'm vertically challenged (5'3") I so wish I were at least 5'5" or a little taller!

Either way, you're right about being thick and being fat - some people just take that way too far.

That woman scared the hell out of me. I am irked though about the black women being fat stigma. It is like the rest of the world is skinny and only black women are big. The majority of America, regardless of race is overweight. I am a vegan which helps me maintain a normal weight, but I also suffer from hypothyroidism, and will be on a controlled diet or medication the rest of my life to ensure I never get to looking like that woman. Per the surgeon general 68% of black women are overweight, for black men it is 58%. The numbers are to me staggering for both. I think it is attributed to horrible diets, lack of exercise, and lack of nutritional knowledge, and an over reliance on processed versus natural foods, which is why most of america is overweight. My question is why is it we always focus on black women, and never black men? There isn't an outreach to get black men to work out, why is that? Why aren't we focused on black people?

This woman definitely has Lymphedema. As someone who has Lymphedema myself and an advocate of same, I can spot the tell-tale signs and can tell the difference whether someone actually has Lymphedema or is merely fat. When you consider that the rest of this woman's body is relatively normal, her hugely-swollen legs are a sure sign of Lymphedema. A problem we have today, though, is that a lot of people have Lymphedema but don't know they have it, because doctors commonly mis-diagnose it.

A few of these people have lymphedema, it's not fat, although lipedema can come along with lymphedema. Don't be too quick to judge them as being overweight when you know nothing about them. If you want to know more about lymphedema, you can read my site, www.lymphland.com Tina

PS the black background on your site makes it awful hard to read.

When you show pictures of people you need to be sure you are accurate in what you are showing and give all the facts. You cannot "lose" lymphedema the way you can "fat" through diet and exercise. It takes special physical therapy and expensive supplies to control this condition that can so far not be cured ( and most of this is not usually covered under medical insurance). In fact exercise for getting rid of "fat" can make lymphedem worse. From the pictures it looks like the lady has lymphedema and lymphedema is color-blind. If she has gone thru treatment for cancer it is even more probably she has lymphedema as that is a major cause of it - the treatment of cancer killing lymphglands. It may be that focus of this website is "black" and "fat" but the pictures used do not support that focus.

One day when I was a child I saw a woman in the parking lot where I sat in the car with my sister while I was waiting for my mother... A woman with very large legs was going into the store.. I stared at her.. she looked like she was in pain.. I felt sorry for her.. I asked my sister what was wrong with her.. she said.. she has Elephantitis .. and I said.. wow.. I hope I never get that.. my sister said I never would and not to worry about it.. 35 years later.. I was diagnosed with Lymphedema a form of Elehpantitis I am told.. People never know what can happen to them later in life.. or even sooner.. I know young and old who have had many disfiguring and painful medical problems and accidents.. It is something everyone should consider... today it is me.. tomorrow it could be you... please try to understand that people with Lymphedema may not even know they have it.. it is hard to get a diagnosis.. People tell then they are fat… People tell them to lose weight…they feel sad and depressed because they CAN'T lose the weight.. they feel pain from the medical deformities and most of all they feel embarrassed.. Which is the one thing they should never have to feel.. Someday we all suffer getting older.. or having different things happen to us in our life.. how you treat others will reflect how you will want to be treated when and if something happens to you or your loved one.. Be Kind...

My girlfriend and I were talking about that picture the other day after seeing it on another blog. I said something had to be wrong with her, cause the top of her body was small. She looked happy, though, which was a bit disturbing to me.

Thanks for the info--I'd never heard of that before--it explains a lot about more than a few folks...

This lady looks like she has LIPEDEMA (and maybe LYMPHedema as well). Lipedema is the abnormal deposition of fatty tissue (lipid is the same as fat). It is a pathological condition, and no amount of exercise will reduce this. It can be very painful/sensitive as well. But keep up the fitness level!! You can tell because she has a normal upper body disproportionate to her lower body. liposuction MAY help but you'd have to have a very good surgeon. Good luck and keep up the good work!
